This city is definitely worth
your attention. Russians call it "The Northern Capital", Europeans - "The
Northern Venice". It is surely the most European of all Russian cities,
but it nevertheless has its own character and soul.
If your main location is in Moscow and you
have only one "free" day - it is still possible to see this wonderful
city. Air-flights are frequent and fast, and trains to St. Petersburg have very convenient schedule
- most of them leave Moscow near midnight and come to St. Petersburg early in
the morning (about 8 hours trip). Trains are safe and really
cheap. First class return ticket is about 45 Euro only (no price difference for
Russians and foreigners). The return trains leave St. Petersburg
late at night, around midnight, and arrive to Moscow about 7-8
a.m. So it is possible just to go there and come back in a day time
without staying there overnight.
